Deftones share unreleased ‘Saturday Night Wrist’ artwork to mark the album’s 15th anniversary

The scrapped concept features a different look from the band’s frequent collaborator Frank Maddocks.

15 years ago on Halloween, Deftones dropped their fifth studio album with 2006’s Saturday Night Wrist. The album was the result of an especially turbulent era in the history of the band and was the final studio effort to feature the band’s original bassist, Chi Cheng. The musician would tragically succumb to his injuries in 2013 after a devastating car accident in 2008 that left him in a vegetative state for years.

Despite the turmoil that marred this particular chapter of Deftones, Saturday Night Wrist was met with critical praise. With comparisons to the spaceiness of Radiohead and celebration of the band’s range from sludge to shoegaze from the likes of Consequence of Sound, NPR, and Spin Magazine, the album reasserted Deftones as a championed outlier in the world of heavy music.

Taking to their social media platform, Deftones marked the 15th anniversary of Saturday Night Wrist by sharing an alternate look at the album’s artwork from longtime visual collaborator, Frank Maddocks. The veteran artist has history with Deftones that extends many years but most recently was showcased by his design of Deftones 2020 crown jewel, Ohms, as well as the band’s anniversary edition of White Pony and the remix LP, Black Stallion.

Deftones shared in their post, “#SaturdayNightWrist turns 15 this Halloween,” Deftones said on Instagram on Sunday (Oct. 31). “Featured here is an unused, alternate concept for the album cover by @frankmaddocks.”

Deftones have been forced to postpone their touring plans until 2022 – including their highly anticipated jaunt with French juggernaut Gojira. For tickets and information, visit Deftones online – HERE
