Regarded as one the bands in heavy music that are set to have a banner year in 2021, Alien Weaponry followed the announcement of their touring trek with Gojira and Knocked Loose with the news that September 17th is the arrival date for their much-anticipated second full length album with Tangaroa. The album will be released via Napalm Records and affirms the hype that been circling the New Zealand trio.
First earning the collective buzz of the heavy music community with their 2018 debut, Tū, the band’s impactful stylistic mesh showcased a spectrum that spanned from groove to thrash. Emphasizing their cultural roots by including lyrics in their indigenous language, te reo Māori, Alien Weaponry’s talent was as undeniable as their intrigue. Further proof of that comes with the more than 10 million views that the single, “Kai Tangata” has racked up since it’s release.
It’s that kind of momentum that makes the announcement of Tangaroa such an important moment. Ready to reaffirm that the hype is real, Alien Weaponry has debut the title track for their second effort which unpacks a vital message about the environment and one of the world’s most precious natural resources – the ocean.
The band’s lead vocalist/guitarist Lewis de Jong explained the ethos of the track.“We decided to write this song about how the ocean is being suffocated by humans and their waste. The ocean is an important part of my life, and it’s important to protect it.”
Alien Weaponry drummer Henry de Jong adds, “‘Tangaroa’ is a heavy and angry message about how we are destroying the ocean with pollution and overfishing. The video ties in with this message, with us drowning in plastic conveying the struggle of ocean life.”
Setting the tone of the album, Tangaroa tackles issues of environmentalism with a sense of real urgency. Working alongside organizations like Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, the band’s message of accountability and reform is one that they are especially passionate about.
Apart from the album’s worldly conscious lean, the thematic weight of the release also takes on much more personal instances with tracks like “Unforgiving” confronting the notion of self-loathing and insecurity, and the sprawling “Buried Underground” detailing the collateral damage of drug abuse. Its this kind of versatility that has given fans good cause to champion the New Zealanders.
