Along with Jon Batiste, the duo took home the hardware for their original score of the Oxiar animated film, ‘Soul’
In an awards ceremony that saw the trio of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross nominated twice in the same ‘Best Original Score’ category for both The Golden Globe Awards and The Academy Awards, the duo again took home the hardware for their musical contribution in the score for the Pixar animated sensation, ‘Soul’ along with Jon Batiste.
Reznor and Ross earn nods for both ‘Soul’ as well as the David Fincher-directed film, ‘Mank’ – notching double nominations for some of the most prestigious trophies in the industry. The connection to FIncher has some historic significance for Reznor and Ross, as the tandem scored their first very Oscar win back in 2011 for their score for the film, ‘The Social Network’.
Discussing the success of 2020 with both ‘Mank’ and ‘Soul,’ Reznor detailed how the transition from film scoring to working on Nine Inch Nails affords both he and Ross and sense of refocus and a new energy that allows both lanes to avoid from becoming monotonous. “What we’ve tried to do since then is break it up where we do some rock music and come back and do some film work. We’ve just done three pretty big [scores] with Watchmen, Mank and Soul in a row. We should be on tour but Covid has prevented that and we are planning on working on Nine Inch Nails material as soon as probably tomorrow.”
Nine Inch Nails haven’t been dormant for long however. The band unexpectedly released both Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts during the first quarter of 2020, marking an especially prolific 2020 from the team of Reznor and Ross.
