Posted by Nicolás Delgadillo in Culture on October 3, 2022

It’s finally horror season and this October’s lineup of newfound frights includes a sequel, a remake and a finale to three iconic franchises and much more

‘Mr. Harrigan’s Phone’ October 5th (Netflix)

If any individual author has a grip on Halloween season then it’s definitely Stephen King. The American horror icon has been frightening the masses for decades, both in the worlds of literature and film and television. This latest adaptation of his work is based on “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone”, a novella from his 2020 If It Bleeds collection. A boy (Jaeden Martell, star of 2017’s It) and an aging billionaire (Donald Sutherland) bond over books — and their first iPhones. But when the older man passes, their mysterious connection refuses to die.

‘Terrifier 2’ October 6th (Theaters)

The awaited sequel to the cult favorite 2016 slasher Terrifier has finally arrived. Damien Leone returns as writer, director and producer in a grisly followup that’s far bigger and more ambitious. After being resurrected by a sinister entity, Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) returns to the timid town of Miles County where he targets a teenage girl (Lauren LaVera) and her younger brother (Elliott Fullam) on Halloween night.

‘Hellraiser’ October 7th (Hulu)

In this new adaptation of Clive Barker’s original novella, a young woman named Riley (Odessa A’zion) struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension. Jamie Clayton will be taking over the role of Pinhead and David Brucker will be directing.

‘Halloween Ends’ October 14th (Theaters / Peacock)

After 45 years, the most acclaimed, revered horror franchise in film history reaches its epic, terrifying conclusion as Laurie Strode faces off for the last time against the embodiment of evil, Michael Myers, in a final confrontation unlike any captured on-screen before. Only one of them will survive. Icon Jamie Lee Curtis returns for the last time as Laurie Strode, horror’s first “final girl” and the role that launched Curtis’ career.

‘V/H/S/99’ (Shudder)

V/H/S/99 marks the return of the acclaimed found footage anthology franchise and the sequel to Shudder’s most-watched premiere of 2021. A thirsty teenager’s home video leads to a series of horrifying revelations. Featuring five new stories from filmmakers Maggie Levin (Into The Dark: My Valentine), Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down, Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City), Flying Lotus (Kuso), Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls) and Joseph & Vanessa Winter (Deadstream), V/H/S/99 harkens back to the final punk rock analog days of VHS, while taking one giant leap forward into the hellish new millennium.

‘Black Adam’ October 21st (Theaters)

The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change. In ancient Kahndaq, Teth Adam (Dwayne Johnson) was bestowed the almighty powers of the gods. After using these powers for vengeance, he was imprisoned, becoming Black Adam. Nearly 5,000 years have passed and Black Adam has gone from man, to myth, to legend. Now released, his unique form of justice, born out of rage, is challenged by modern day heroes who form the Justice Society: Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo) and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell).

‘Slayers’ October 21st (Theaters / Digital)

Vampire slayer Elliot Jones (Thomas Jane) made it his life’s mission to take revenge on the bloodsuckers who killed his teenage daughter. After years of tracking them, he’s finally reached their secret and hidden base. However, to get to them, he’ll need help from a motley crew of social media superstars who’ve been invited to party at a compound that’s also a lair for ancient vampires.

‘Matriarch’ October 21st (Hulu)

Afflicted with a mysterious disease after surviving an overdose, a woman (Jemima Rooper) returns to her childhood home to confront her personal demons but instead discovers a real one. Written and directed by Ben Steiner, Matriarch is a family trauma body horror straight from the UK.

‘Prey for the Devil’ October 28th (Theaters)

In response to a global rise in demonic possessions, the Catholic Church reopens exorcism schools to train priests in the Rite of Exorcism. On this spiritual battlefield, an unlikely warrior rises: a young nun, Sister Ann (Jacqueline Byers). Although nuns are forbidden to perform exorcisms, a professor (Colin Salmon) recognizes Sister Ann’s gifts and agrees to train her. Thrust onto the spiritual frontline with fellow student Father Dante (Christian Navarro), Sister Ann finds herself in a battle for the soul of a young girl and soon realizes the Devil has her right where he wants her….and it wants in.

‘Wendell & Wild’ October 28th (Netflix)

From the delightfully wicked minds of Henry Selick (director of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline) and Jordan Peele (Nope, Us, Get Out) comes the story of Kat (Lyric Ross), a troubled teen haunted by her past, who must confront her personal demons, Wendell & Wild (played by Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele) to start a new life in her old hometown. Wendell & Wild also stars Angela Bassett, James Hong, and Ving Rhames.
