All Hails: Kreator and Sepultura reign supreme on the Klash of the Titans Tour

Posted by Ramon Gonzales in Culture on May 30, 2023

The full assault of thrash’s best was on display as the tour pairing two legends of the genre detonated in Los Angeles.

The combining billing of thrash metal pillars Kreator and Sepultura offered the kind of dream pairing that is difficult to wrap your head around. Given the irrefutable legacy of both bands, either function powerfully on their own as a headliner, however with the Klash of the Titans Tour, the tandem team up for what has been one of the most exciting live offerings of the touring season thus far.

For the German powerhouse in Kreator, the band are trekking in support of their landmark 15th studio album with 2022’s Hate Uber Alles. Proving as potent as ever, the legends managed to condense a body of work spanning four decades into a succinct live set that covered thrash essentials and new classics. Touching on vital albums including 1900’s Coma of Souls, Pleasure to Kill from 1986, 2005’s Enemy of God, Extreme Aggression from 1989, and including the band’s second generation of dominance with Gods of Violence from 2017, 2009’s Hordes of Chaos, and 2001’s Violent Revolution, Kreator brilliantly framed the depth of their thrash metal durability.

As for Sepultura, the Brazilian bulldozer are out in support of their 2021 live EP, SepulQuarta. A shining testament to the spirit of collaboration and the live prowess of the band, the compilation album features a all-star roster of special guests all revisiting some of the band’s most beloved tracks.

While the band ensured fans got their dose of Sepultura classics like “Refuse/Resist”, “Arise” and “Roots Bloody Roots” the band also emphasized their modern era with tracks like “Isolation” and Agony of Defeat from their 2020 studio album, Quadra. The contrast of classic and contemporary underscored a band that could easily rely on their legacy for live effectiveness, but remain intent on progress – only adding to their potency.

Coupled with a distinctive opening tandem in thrash veterans Death Angel and emerging desert death practitioners Spiritworld, the Klash of Titans tour is celebration of the speed, precision and pummel that characterize everything fans love about thrash.
