Get a rundown of the essential new releases dropping today – from death/tech to doom, stoner metal to deathcore – here is what should be on your radar.
This week we have a bit of something for everyone, from furious technical death metal, to something spooky perfect for Halloween!
Archspire – Bleed The Future – Technical Death Metal
“Bleed the Future” will stand out as an absolutely vicious and unrelenting metal record. When Archspire was deciding how many BPMs, they simply said “Yes!”. This album may be a breath-taking, hyper-speed assault, but is also not short on the melody. Perfect for any extreme metal fan.
Ghost Bath have returned with something heavier and much darker. Their fourth album concludes and ever darker trilogy of releases. Atmospheric, melodic and even a bit creepy at times, “Self Loather” is the black metal album for the season.
Lucifer’s core sound remains resolutely locked in the ’70s but with a wealth of style and flair in each song. Deceptively light hearted with a dark soul, Lucifer IV brings plenty of doom-laden upbeat occult rock that should be on everyone’s playlist this Halloween.
Would you like some Mastodon? How about some more Mastodon? How about a DOUBLE DOSE OF MASTODON!? This behemoth album boasts a staggering 86 minutes of signature Mastdon prog/sludge. Get ready for a complete trip with Blood Mountain-esque madness on “Pushing The Tides,” Crack The Skye space metal on “Teardrinker,” and Once More ‘Round the Sun experimenting on “Sickle and Peace. And those are just the singles!
Doom: the genre where 5 songs is a full album. Monolord have zero shortage of heavy, slow fuzz on “Your Time To Shine”, these guys take the scenic road through hazy stoner riffs and crushing sludge.
With ‘A Dying Wish’, Thulcandra continues to pay homage to the frostiness of black metal. If you’re looking for something to soundtrack the harshest and coldest days of our impending winter then this will do nicely.
Rather than re-treading the same old deathcore ground as before, Kin is one of Whitechapel’s most diverse records. Largely deathcore, but with slower more emotive moments throughout. Whitechapel has definitely pushed beyond their own boundaries here.
War Of Ages – Rhema (Facedown Records) – Metalcore
Zeolite – Proselytism (EVP Recordings) – Technical death metal
