What a riches of pro wrestling that we got as fans this weekend, as WWE delivered Night of Champions last Saturday and AEW delivered Double Or Nothing. And, as a cherry on top, NXT also had a big event with Battleground on Sunday as well.
Let’s go over the top moments on Night of Champions and Double or Nothing.
The moment everybody is talking about from the show is the big advancement in the Bloodline storyline. After weeks of bullying from Roman Reigns, Jimmy Uso had enough. The Usos interfered in the main event, trying to assist Roman Reigns, but Roman wasn’t happy about it. Finally, Jimmy superkicked Roman twice, leading to the finish where Sami and Kevin pinned solo.
Equally as great was Sami Zayn getting a monster ovation for his first appearance in front of the Saudi Arabian crowd. Zayn even spoke to the fans in Arabic, leading to huge reactions. What he said was basically, “Excuse me, We are in an Arabic country, we have an Arab champion, so we are going to do this in Arabic.” This was very special:
Meanwhile, Cody Rhodes wrestled with a storyline broken arm. Also in the storyline, he was allowed to wear a “titanium cast” which he used as a weapon but ultimately was not successful. Brock put a kimura on the arm and somehow the story is that Cody wouldn’t give up and passed out from the pain:
Seth Rollins defeated AJ Styles in a great opening match to win the new World Heavyweight Champion. At the end of the match, Triple H came into the ring to crown Rollins:
Also of note, Asuka won the Raw Women’s Championship after spraying her own fingers with mist, and rubbing the fingers in Bianca’s face, ending Bianca’s record title reign.
The main event of the show was Anarchy in the Arena, which was a wild brawl, and here are some memorable moments:
Some innovative use of thumb tacks…
…barbed wire and glass…
…and this…
The world title fatal four way was another highlight with MJF coming out on top.
Tay Melo and Sammy Guverra revealed before the match that they’re expecting a child…
After Jade Cargill successfully defended her TBS Championship against Taya, she once again laid out an open challenge. It was accepted by Kris Stratlander and the crowd went nuts.
Wardlow revealed he’s insane:
Max Caster’s rap was great too, but that’s been scrubbed from the internet. There was also this:
Also, Pentagon’s daughter is pretty amazing:
I’ll have more to say about both shows on Squared Circle Pit tomorrow.
PWInsider reports that Braun Strowman is currently out with an unspecific injury.
WWE have started the qualifying matches for Money in the Bank next month and Ricochet and Nakamura have already advanced.
Fightful Select reports that Vince McMahon has regularly been making changes to Raw remotely.
After Konosuke Takeshita attacked Kenny Omega at the end of the AEW PPV, Kota Ibushi commented to Dark Puroresu Flowsion, “I never thought he was that great,” Ibushi said. “He is a made imitation of me. Also, he never respected me.”
Alexa Bliss announced that she and musician Ryan Cabrera are expecting a child:
Ronda Rousey and Shayna Bayzler are the new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. Rousey spoke to the NY Post about her win after and said “Well, the lack of competition is really the problem,” Rousey said. “I mean, we want to be the most active champions out there. I want to be able to defend this title every week and even twice a week on both ‘SmackDown’ and ‘Raw’. But with how dismally shallow the women’s division is right now, there’s not enough women around here to keep us busy for a month. And so that’s the biggest challenge that we have is to get this company to actually care and invest into this tag division.”
Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, who also owns NWA, defended his decision to put the world title on Tyrus, who also happens to be a Fox News analyst. Speaking to New York Post, Corgan said “When Tyrus walks through the door, he brings the heat, and if you’re not gonna watch him, then you’re not a wrestling fan. I’m not booking a charity. I’m booking a professional wrestling company. I believe that dissenting voices should have a seat at the table and let the American public decide which is more important on any particular argument. I don’t believe in canceling out a voice because you’re not comfortable with their perspective, and that’s somehow supposed to translate into professional wrestling.”
WWE published Roman Reigns’ schedule for the summer. Looks like he isn’t missing too many Smackdowns this summer:
Will Ospreay told Chris Van Vliet that he expects to resign with New Japan Pro Wrestling. “I am very confident that me and New Japan are going to work something out because I just don’t want to live in America,” Ospreay said. “That’s my full-stop thing. I just don’t want to. I’m basically saying, we’ll sort something out [with NJPW].”
WrestleQuest, a cool new throwback video game released a new trailer:
WWE ring announcer Samantha Irvine kept the crowd entertained during commercial breaks on Raw. Here’s a clip of her singing the DX theme.
Finally, here’s the first commercial for the new AEW show, Collision, premiering in a few weeks:
