Arguably the most anticipated comic book flick of 2021 finally reveals the trailer and includes a piece of internet meme culture that has fans clamoring.
The Snyder Cut of Justice League has finally unveiled its official trailer and it’s kind of a really big deal.
The trailer showcases some of the new footage that Snyder reshot for the completion of the project. Fans see the likes of Ben Affleck as Batman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Amber Heard as Mera, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Henry Cavill as Superman and Ezra Miller as the Flash converge as the superhero all-star cast in a presentation that seems to have all of the intended glory of the initial vision.
Another big item that differentiates this version of the film is the return of Jared Leto as The Joker – making his first return as the Clown Prine of Crime since 2016’s Suicide Squad. Flexing a bit of pop culture cred, Joker’s appearance punctuates the trailer with the line, ““We live in a society [long pause] where honor is a distant memory.” that has sent fans on the internet into a fit.
That particular line has existed online as an omnipresent meme that is paired with images of The Joker. It’s intended as a sarcastic comparative reference and has been a prevalent on the internet forever, but the Joker, in any iteration, has never said it. Until now.
Given the use of the reference and its link to shitty comparisons, it’s hard not to think that this might be Snyder’s grand gesture of trollism, firmly asserting this version of the film is better than it’s predecessor. Even Jared Leto took to Twitter to acknowledge the well-placed jab.
The “Snyder Cut” is the result of the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement that began to take shape in 2017 after the release of the Joss Whedon version. Snyder walked away from the film after the tragic passing of his daughter, only to have Whedon come on to finish. What happened, was a significant change from the vision that Snyder had for the film, complete with humor that felt forced and fell flat – an poor attempt to follow the lively tone that exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but one that doesn’t jive with DC’s much darker, adult-driven brand.
Complete with new footage and the restored vision that Snyder had for the film initially, the Snyder Cut arrives on HBO Max starting March 18th. Watch the trailer below.
