Doom metal frame makers Candlemass have released a powerful third showing of musical hulk, previewing their November 18th Napalm Records LP, Sweet Evil Sun. “When Death Sighs” is unveiled with another animated visual and a commanding show of prowess from Lars Johansson and Mappe Björkman as the band’s stylistic signature is anchored by sledgehammer heavy fretwork.

The arrival of the third showing follows the emphatic introduction of “Scandinavian Gods” and the quintessential doom successor in Sweet Evil Sun. Adding an element of the ethereal with Jennie-Ann Smith of Avatarium’s vocal soar the track, the almost haunting vocal performance makes for yet another layer of depth in the already dynamic track.

Since Candlemass first announced the arrival of Sweet Evil Sun with a resounding introduction in “Scandinavian Gods”, the succession of singles have further reasserted the veteran collective are still operating at their creative peak. The skilled showcase of doom revealed in the series of singles, powerfully punctuates the project that took the band some 18 months of full focus to complete. The result was a potent assertion of the band’s enduring prowess, nearly four decades into their tenure.

Speaking of the totality of the album, Edling explained, “Sweet Evil Sun is about hope, striving, adoration and failure. It’s about all the personal battles that you have, but also the never-ending decay of humanity. The record took over a year to make and there’s not a bad track on it! We had a fantastic time recording it and are really looking forward to the release. It’s Doom, It’s Metal! It is the essence of Candlemass put into one album!”

Sweet Evil Sun marks the band’s follow-up to their acclaimed 2019 release, The Door to Doom, and reasserts how the band not only established the framework for the genre, but continues to be as progressive in the space as ever.
