The relaunch includes a stunning 14-minute 4D cinema film directed by Eric “Shade” Balderose that took 2000 hours to complete.
Further emphasizing their commitment to forward-thinking and innovative intensity, hardcore renegdaes Code Orange have introduced their next iteration, launching the inaugural release on the newly forged Blue Grape Music banner.
What Is Really Underneath? is sources elements from the band’s universally-acclaimed 2020 breakout full length, Underneath, by taking the conventional idea of the remix album and turning it on its head. Doubling as a compelling film score/movie soundtrack, the release breathes new life into the existing tracks of Underneath, adds to two previously unreleased companion pieces and creates a new sonic soundscapes tailor-made for an ambitious visual component.
The visual paired with the ambitious release includes a pain-staking effort headed by Code Orange’s Eric “Shade” Balderose — who took on the task of bringing the Dantanian-dystopia to life. Putting in some 2000 hours over the course of four months, the animation utilizes Cinema 4D and Octant Render to frame the redemption story of the band’s Mudman character first introduced via the single, “The Mud” from their celebrated 2017 album, Forever.
The final element of the band’s takeover includes the launch of a new, fully-immersive alternate reality game available at whatisreallyunderneath.com — The complete 360-degree design allows players to endlessly explore, going down a demneted rabbit hole complete with unexpected discoveries, true to Code Orange form.
