Hardcore Blue Chip Prospects Soul Glo Reveal New Video For “Gold Chain Punk (whogonbeatmyass?)”

Posted by Corinne Westbrook in News on July 7, 2022

The band addresses the constant Bad Brains comparisons with a bit of light-hearted sarcasm.

Hot on the heels of their fresh release, Diaspora Problems, inventive punk fusion artists Soul Glo have released the music video for opening track “Gold Chain Punk (whogonbeatmyass?).” Catchy, though scathing in its delivery, the video was directed by Dan White x $$$NICCA. It depicts a group of white folks visiting the band members at their homes, proudly handing out leaflets titled “Did You Know Bad Brains Sounds So Much Like Soul Glo?” offering a bit of tongue-in-cheek commentary on the comparison.

“If you’re a Black person who is into any kind of hard rock, you’ve probably had a white person try to talk to you about Bad Brains,” vocalist Pierce Jordan shared. “We are constantly compared to them. Apparently, I even look like HR. Can I fuckin’ live?”

Diaspora Problems’  has been hailed as a critical success. Championed by revered voices like Stereogum, Consequence, Pitchfork, Revolver, and NPR, the band’s spirit of non-conformity and individuality ring apparent throughout the album. The band’s genuine sense of “no fucks given” are just part of why Soul Glo has become such a celebrated anomaly in the current landscape of hardcore.

The Philly group will be touring the US and Canada with Show Me The Body starting later this month and will be touring the UK and Europe in the fall. Full dates below. On August 26th, the band will support Turnstile and My Chemical Romance, in addition to sets at Furnace Fest and Desert Daze to cap off their summer. Get tickets – HERE
