Philly’s hardcore heavy hitters prove relentless on the latest single preview, “Gates of Horn”.
Just last month, Philly hardcore collective Jesus Piece confirmed their signing with Century Media Records and introduced the new era of the band with their first offering of new music since their 201b debut, Only Self.
Bridging the volatility of hardcore with the band’s penchant for early 2000’s metalcore riffage, “An Offering to The Night” reiterated why Jesus Piece continues to be championed among fans of all walks. The combination of David Updike and John DiStefano on guitars, set to the crushing cadence of Luis Aponte on the beat, create an all out barrage that vocalist Aaron Heard completes with an unhinged spew.
Now, the band have delivered a second, no less bombastic preview of new music with the single, “Gates of Horn” to officially introduce the band’s eagerly-awaited full length, …So Unknown due out April 14th. The track sonic chaos, anchored by the menacing presence of frontman Aaron Heard. At sub 3-minutes, the second single is a musical beatdown that depicts the trauma of nightmares played out IRL.
The catharsis of the track is front and center as explained by the band’s drummer, Luis Aponte. “This is as close to a Jesus Piece experience as you’re going to get without standing in front of us.”
Aponte further reiterated how the record is intended to help convey the impact of the band’s live prowess. “The number one thing is the live performance,” says Aponte. “You can be in the studio and make that record sound insane but if you’re not giving that same energy, that same feeling when you play live, it just doesn’t matter.”
Co-produced and mixed by Randy LeBouef (Every Time I Die, Orthodox), …So Unknown thematically treads on the treacherous side of real life – documented in song by the Philly hardcore crew. Heard looms large with a bark as big as the band’s collective bite on the 10-track, 28-minute slobberknocker.
Aponte spoke in greater detail of the significance of the album an d the kind of creative investment the band poured into the project. “The making of the record was nothing short of all-consuming. It was an intense and challenging process,” explains Aponte. “
The record reflects a lot of confusion, but also, evolution. There was a lot of uncertainty and emotion during the pandemic– we all changed and grew so much. So if there is a single thought or concept to the record, it’s constant metamorphosis. That’s also how we operated as a band on this LP– spending a lot of time songwriting and fleshing things out as a unit, and then upping our game from there. It’s definitely a reflection of us as more mature, playing the best we’ve ever played and feeling like a real band for the first time.”
