Despite being sidelined by a dismal 2020 that completely halted live music on a global level, the co-headlining run of Megadeth and Lamb of God in the Metal Tour of the Year delivered on caravan’s namesake in 2021.
The initial leg of the cross-country trek spanned some 28-dates and saw the tandem of Megadeth and Lamb of God hold court over a combined total of over 172,000 passionate metal fans. Bolstered by the power and prowess of Floridian metal titans Trivium and rounded out with the metallic hardcore heavyweights of Hatebreed, Metal Tour of the Year not only made good on it’s emphatic title but proved a triumphant return of live music as a whole.
Among the first major-production, amphitheater-sized tours to resume the rigors of the road in 2021, the assembly of some of the genre’s most venerated contributors, all on the same bill, earned universal praise for it’s consistency, it’s catharsis, and it’s crushing nightly performances from start to finish.
The resounding success of the 2021 installment of Metal Tour of the Year has resulted in a second leg of the tour set to roar back in 2022. Headed by the dynamic duo of Megadeth and Lamb of God, Trivium will again serve as special guests, with the tour’s initial fourth, In Flames, kicking off the festivities of the second stretch.
Megadeth mastermind Dave Mustaine spoke of the announcement. “The Metal Tour of The Year is exactly what it sounds like – a night of some of the best heavy metal bands in the world – live and loud. Anyone who came to a show last year knows what I mean, only this one’s going be even better. Do not miss out.”
The co-captain of the run in Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe added, “It was great to get out on the road for an incredible tour last summer with Megadeth, Trivium and Hatebreed so we figured we’d do it again! We look forward to hitting new cities with Megadeth, Trivium and In Flames, who we’re happy to have over for leg 2!”
Trivium frontman Matthew K. Heafy weighed in with his assessment of leg one and his excitement to resume leg two. “The Metal Tour Of The Year was one of the strongest, most incredible Metal tours in ages – it’s namesake nothing but accurate. How do you follow that up? By doing it again – even bigger, even better, and have it play everywhere it didn’t on the first leg. MTOTYII – let’s do this.“
In Flames vocalist Anders Fridén enthused about finally being able to join rank. ”We are excited to finally be able to join our dear friends in Megadeth, Lamb of God, and Trivium on this year’s, Metal Tour of The Year! We can’t wait to be back on the road in America and to reunite with you all. Don’t miss this tour it’s a juggernaut.”
The 21-date jaunt will commence in Sin City with a tour kick off set for Saturday, April 9th in Las Vegas, NV. Metal Tour of the Year pulls up the brakes for the final show of the second leg in Allentown, PA on Sunday, May 15th.
