While certain tracks may seem daunting at first look (one is almost 15 minutes long!) once you are lost in the music, you’ll wonder how it ended so quickly. There is something for everyone on this album: black metal, death metal, progressive, atmospheric, and all things in between!

Banefyre is, without a doubt, a trip down the rabbit hole (if the cover art didn’t tell you that already). Complex, deeply evocative and beautifully crafted, Crippled Black Phoenix have created an album that plunges you deep into the dark. Lavish melodies with a harrowing message, this album has a lot to explore and will take more than one listen to absorb, but it is well worth multiple spins.

The sophomore album from Holy Fawn can really be summed up in two words: world building. A hallmark of the unity of shoegaze and metal, the soaring and sweeping nature of the music goes beyond simply telling a story. There is tragedy, melancholy, pain, but also euphoria throughout this album. This one feels like an excellent lead up to Fall.

The immortal dark king of metal has seamlessly blended the past and the future on Patient Number 9. From reunions with old collaborators, including Zakk Wylde, Robert Trujillo, and Tony Iommi and some new and interesting guests (Jeff Beck, Mike McCready, and more), Ozzy gave us an excellent album for lucky number 13!

Parkway Drive have cemented themselves as one of the driving forces of metalcore. While not abandoning their staples, the band has branched out on their sound, traversing hard rock, more straightforward metal, some gothic flair, and even dipping a bit into the nu metal revival. Darker Still is indeed dark, but also accessible and easy to get into.

Revocation held exactly nothing back on Netherheaven. Furious guitars, savage vocals, quirky but bludgeoning bass lines, Netherheaven is easily the band’s heaviest to date. Dave Davidson’s guitar work is exceptional as always, but the level of rage on this album is astounding.

I’ll admit, the first time I listened to this band it was solely because of their name. Prosthetic Records has been batting 1000 so I was also fairly certain it would be awesome. Eocide is 12 tracks of uncompromising ferocity! This album descends into almost incomprehensibly disgusting depths, bringing grindcore to an even more ungodly state. There are some surprises throughout that will leave you feeling sullied and unusual. Definitely spin!

Tallah have put the “new” back in nu metal. While clearly influenced by the nu metal greats of the late 90s and early 00s, Tallah bring a progressive edge fit for 2022. Tallah are fearless in their composition and fierce in their vocals. Not one to sleep on!
