New Flesh: Releases from Behemoth, Mire, and more!

With the end of the year in sight, the final weeks of 2021 come with a collection of quality tracks ranging from black, death, and metalcore from some of heavy music’s most exciting artists.
We are winding down the year, but that doesn’t mean we are winding down the music. Here are some highlights from this week, full list of releases at the bottom:
Age Of Athena – Gate To Oblivion – Symphonic Metal
Age of Athena is a new band from Canada’s Ontario and their debut, Gate to Oblivion, is a solid concoction of American metalcore and European symphonic metal. Throughout the guitar work, I also hear solid eastern influence in the melodies. The vicious interplay of death metal and more traditional vocals are also highlights to the project. Definitely worth a spin or 10.
In the absence of regular shows, high-quality streaming events were aplenty this year. Behemoth is no exception to this, turning out a 19 track, expansive set featuring songs from their entire career. The sound quality is top notch, but the video, filmed in an abandoned church (because of course it was) is also visually one of the most striking streams of the year.
The sophomore album from Mire shows how the band has grown since Nick Hipa has stepped away from As I Lay Dying. With more focus on the project, the trio has really stepped into their own with the album being rife with melody, emotional lyrics, metalcore ferocity and technical bursts of energy.
Malaysia based, groove infused death metal outfit Mothflesh unleashed a hell of an album this week! A testament to the dystopian nature of our reliance on technology, the album is pure savagery with no lack of catchiness. Combining elements of death metal, modern hardcore, and groove this is equal parts bounce and stomp.
Myrdød – The Mourning Hollow – Blackened Death Metal
A solidly nightmarish blend of black and death metal, Myrdød is frightfully raw and delightfully drenched in the smell of death. Catchy death metal bass and stark, screeching vocals, blend seamlessly to create an album that is the soundtrack to your darkest dreams.
If you like melodic death metal with a sprinkling of blackened moments, this is an album for you! Classic meets modern, the third album from Wound shows a style progression that shows these guys mean business in forging their own path in the death metal world, while not ignoring the roots of their already established sound.
