Northlane tackles the toxicity of social media with “Echo Chamber”

The second single from the band’s self-release, self-recorded Obsidian flexes dynamic songwriting range and relevant social commentary.

Australian powerhouse Northlane have delivered a towering new single from the band’s forthcoming 2022 full length, Obsidian, with the unveiling of “Echo Chamber”.

A potent mesh of electronic accents, slick production and the dynamic vocal range of frontman Marcus Bridge, make for an emphatic introduction to the band’s sixth studio effort. As for the source material for the track, “Echo Chamber” offers a timely observation of the climate of divisiveness that permeates among the subculture social media. In short, the single suggests a simple call to action, “Have you tried turning it off?”

“It’s hard to be on the internet without seeing people get continuously angry about something,” says frontman Marcus Bridge. “We’re addicted to having a hot take about nothing and it’s quite exhausting. At the same time, I shouldn’t let it bother me that much but it’s like a ringing in my ears after a while, so I’m praying I go deaf.”

Intent on recapturing the success of the band’s 2019 stylistic coup in Alien, Northlane have reenlisted the oversight of longtime collaborator Chris Blancato. Opting to go it independently, Northlane’s Obsidian is entirely self-recorded and self-produced – a gamble that thus far has paid dividends in the swell of excitement the band has generated thus far.

The release of “Echo Chamber” follows the previous reveal from the album with the track, “Clockwork“. Another relevant observational track, the single depicted the plight of artists expected to be productive despite the mental and emotional havoc of the last year.
