Mega-producer Andrew Watt reveals how the follow-up to Ozzy’s ‘Ordinary Man’ needed to be something just as special if not more. It looks as though the duo are on their way.
Revered producer Andrew Watt was recently featured in Guitar World in a story that recapped a 2020 heart that saw the 30-year old deservedly earn a Grammy nod for producer of the year.
Among his many credits in just 2020 alone that range from Miley Cyrus to Post Malone to Blink-182, one of Watt’s biggest accomplishments was his work with the legendary Ozzy Osbourne on his unanimously-praised LP, Ordinary Man.
In his feature via Guitar World, Watt discussed how he was already at work on the follow-up for the record and how the decision to work together again was predicated on a very simple agreement.
“And you know, the last album was really special for everyone involved. And so there was no point in Ozzy or me doing this again unless we thought we could bring something new to the table. And I feel like we’re achieving that.”
As for what is new this time around, the personnel that is making their way through the studio doors is nothing short of incredible.
“There’s a bunch of people involved. I can’t say for sure until the end, but I started doing a bunch of basic tracks with Chad (Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Robert Trujillo, who used to play in Ozzy’s band. And Taylor Hawkins also came in and played a bunch on the record as well, which adds a different flair – it kind of harkened back to Ozzy’s ‘80s era, in a great way. And I think it’s so cool for a rock fan to be able to listen to half an album with Chad Smith on drums, and then you flip it over and you get to hear Taylor Hawkins.”
Detailing that thus far some of the songs that have been completed are clocking in at epic lengths of 8 and 9 minutes apiece, it certainly feels like the next installment of the creative marriage between Watt and Ozzy is becoming something of a rock n roll dynasty.
