The band begin their ‘World Is A Vampire’ North American tour next month with support from Interpol, Stone Temple Pilots and Rival Sons.
As the Smashing Pumpkins head toward their highly-anticipated North American “The World Is A Vampire Tour”, they have bestowed upon us a new video for “Spellbinding”, a dark, infectious track taken from their latest album, ATUM. Directed by Kevin Kerslake, the fantastical video features each member existing in an entirely new digital world as an avatar of themselves. The video draws heavily from video games and crafts an immersive narrative.
Speaking on the making of this video, Kerslake shares: “We adopted a virtual production model for the Spellbinding video, creating it entirely in the gaming engine; unreal, with digital avatars moving through fantastical worlds that play a key role in the ATUM storyline. Billy and I share an interest in the fusion of old-world elements with state of the art technology, and all the stars aligned on this video to break new ground.”
Both Kerslake and Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan go into depth on the making of the music video and the inspirations behind it in the video below.
Written and produced by Corgan, ATUM is a mammoth 33-track album that exists in three parts and serves as the sequel to 1995’s Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness and 2000’s Machina/Machine of God. The album explores a breadth of topics from technology, alternate universes, and cosmic experiences creating an otherworldly atmosphere that is still entirely terrestrial. The album is available to stream or purchase HERE.
The Smashing Pumpkins will embark on their North American tour starting July 28th, with support from Interpol, Stone Temple Pilots, and Rival Sons. The tour will wrap on September 9th in Noblesville, IN. Tickets are available HERE.
