The 'Sound of Metal' scores big with multiple Oscar nominations

Actor Riz Ahmed earns a spot as Best Actor in a Leading Role with the film earning six nominations in total including, Best Picture.

The 93rd annual Academy Awards have unveiled their 2021 nominations.

Actor Riz Ahmed made history with the announcement of the nominations, becoming the first Muslim actor to be nomination in the category of lead performance. Ahmed has earned wide-spread acclaim for his performance of Ruben Stone, a drummer for an emerging punk/hardcore hybrid in the band Blackgammon in the film, Sound of Metal.

The film depicts Ruben’s emotional coming to grips with losing his hearing as a touring musician. To prepare for the role, Ahmed needed to learn how to play the drums, he learned American sign language and attended Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous sessions to fully present an accurate portrayal of Stone’s character.

In all, Sound of Metal racked up six nominations including Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor in Paul Raci, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, and the show’s top honors in Best Picture.

Following the duo’s domination at the recent Golden Globe Awards, Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross tallied nominations in the Best Original Score category twice, for their work in the David Fincher-directed Mank, and the Jon Batiste-aided score for the Pixar-animated feature, Soul. The trio of Reznor, Ross, Batiste took home the Golden Globe trophy for Soul.

The 93rd annual Academy Awards will broadcast on the ABC Network on April 25th at 8pm ET. A complete list of nominees can be viewed below the trailer for Amazon Original film, Sound of Metal.
