The jam marks the first public performance of members of Power Trip since Riley Gale’s passing.
Death metal OGs Obituary took to the livestreaming platform again this weekend in the first of two performances. The band’s March 27th show was a collection of their favorite tracks spanning the length of their legendary catalog. The upcoming April 3rd performance will see the band play ‘The End Complete’ in its entirety.
Among the highlights from the first night’s performance included a visit from former tour mates in some of the remaining members of Power Trip. Both Blake Ibanez, Nick Stewart, and Chris Whetzel turned up in the stream to join the band for a cover of Power Trip’s Grammy-Nominated anthem, “Executioner’s Tax (Swing of the Axe)”.
Prior to the jam session of the track, Obituary drummer Donald Tardy held up a photo of Power Trip’s frontman Riley Gale in honor of the departed frontman. The performance of the song also marked the fist pubic performance from members of Power Trip since Gale’s passing.
Prior to the most recent Grammy Awards celebration, the remaining members of Power Trip did their first interview with The Los Angeles Times. In the feature, guitarist Blake Ibanez shared, “Losing Riley was the saddest thing that ever happened to me. But I’m so proud of everything we accomplished together. One of the coolest things from the start was that there was no ceiling to this band, and this Grammy nomination is a perfect example of that.”
As for the future for Power Trip, things seem uncertain though everyone is intent on somehow moving forward. Ibanez explained, “We do want to continue to play music together; we just are not sure what that looks like at this time.”
