Bandcamp Roulette: Doom Meets Sludge Meets Post-Everything With Might’s ‘Abyss’

The Knotfest discovery series takes a chance on new artists to find hidden talent thriving in the underground.

Crawling out of the darkness of sludge covered doom, Might layer crunch and fuzz, melancholy and potency on their sophomore album, Abyss. Pulling from a swath of genres including black metal, sludge, doom, post-rock and shoegaze, Might have crafted their own space in the genre that is uncompromising and raw in its power.

Kicking off the album is a short stroll through dulcet piano tones layered under tar covered riffs. The album then picks up the page on “Lost” adding extra layers of fuzz and crunch to the somber tone of the album. “Abysses” adds an element of mystery to the album, while “Circles” brings almost a punky vibe, picking up the pace.

“Who’s Ahead” acts as an interlude in the album, giving the listener a moment after “Circles.” “Tightrope Walk” has strong 60s rock vibes, especially on the vocals. Dreamy and sad at the same time. “How Sad A Fate” marks the longest track on the album and is a microcosm of the album itself. Fully encapsulating the journey.

Abyss is an exercise in perfect balance. Loud and soft, harsh and serene, all complement each other perfectly throughout the course of the album. Might have crafted something that takes you through each level of emotional intensity, the highs and the lows, in a dream-like manner. The range of influences showcase this band’s musical prowess and the songwriting is as intriguing as it is engaging. Pick up your copy of Abyss HERE.
