Black metal solo projects seem to be the perfect catalyst for dark, artistic experimentation within the genre. Maybe it is the lack of constraints of other members that allows a singular person to really stretch their wings, but whatever it is, Sickle of Dust has it in spades.
Sickle of Dust’s single member, Ash, has a considerable background in compositional music, which he presents with very strong doses of symphonic / orchestral music and haunting, almost gothic vocals, within the frosty black metal structure. Where the Sun Glare Danced combines both urgent aggression and sad, pensive melancholy throughout its themes and instrumentation.
Ghost-like and haunting, the album ebbs and flows in an almost dreamlike (or nightmare-like) way. This is a very technically polished album and it is almost shocking that it is all the work of one very talented multi-instrumentalist. This is an album that is “timeless” to any soul wandering the epic realms. The production may not be sparkly like your average orchestral album, but the raw and harsh nature still maintains a warmth that will keep you returning.
Where the Sun Glare Danced was released on February 22, 2022 and can be purchased HERE.
