Kyning is a progressive gem coming to us from Germany. This album is an absolutely massive addition to the stoner/prog category. The very definition of “more than the sum of its parts”, Kyning’s Ān pulls in elements of grunge and doom, with vocals that shift from atmospheric and clean to guttural and fierce faster than the changing tides!
The striking atmosphere on this album is one of mythical melancholy, fueled by sombre malcontent. Working from a heavy, riff-driven foundation, Kyning delve into progressive structures and shifts without feeling overly complicated or losing the listener for the sake of complexity. There are healthy doses of stoner fuzz with the cracks and pops of darker and more extreme genres. This album feels almost like a black metal album in its bleakness, but not in its approach. Also, massive props to the album artwork, which both perfectly fits and enhances the overall mood of the album.
Founded in 2018 in Germany, Kyning’s Ān marks the debut full length from the band. Full of grit, hooks and personality, and uplifted by a unique and engaging vocal approach, if this is their debut, there are a lot of reasons to be excited for their future!
