If you enjoyed Stormkeep’s debut album last here, here is another one to quench your frosty thirst for beautifully orchestrated black metal. Harnessing the icy tundra of black metal’s Scandinavian roots, Piercing Through the Frozen Eternity is an odyssey. From the onset, “Untenkutoja” sets the mood with wind, symphonics and haunting piano melodies, which follow through on the lead guitar for “For Thy Light Is Ice”.
Employing synths on “Ice Veiled Spell” and classic guitar work on “Wolven Hour” showcase that this band is not limited by simply being “black metal”. The variety of influences have created something dark, epic, medieval, and soulful. The songwriting is accomplished, sprinkled with ambiance and deeply rooted melancholy.
Formed in 2018, Moonlight Sorcery is a Finnish black metal trio with a strong palette of influences ranging from black metal classics, heavy, death and symphonic metal. In a genre that can be somewhat limiting at times, Moonlight Sorcery have found a level of versatility that is engaging and inspiring.
