Our own Cori Westbrook picks an album at random and lands on the black metal bleakness of Antoine Scholtès.
Inherits the Void is another shining example of a soulful black metal solo project. Mastermind Antoine Scholtès creates sweeping soundscapes through the bleak oblivion with Monolith of Light. Melodically-rich atmospheric black metal, the album is one in which you can truly become absorbed.
The otherworldly opening of “Pillars Of The Aether” set an interesting tone, like traveling through the wasteland of some other forgotten planet. “As The Winds Moan The Threnody” is more ferocious, but not lacking in atmosphere, and even touches a bit on the progressive side. Title track “Monolith Of Light” is saturated in atmosphere and mood, while “Unfathomable Echoes” brings a sense of passionate savagery. Closing track “Aorasia” is the perfect culmination of each of the highlights of the previous tracks for something entirely grand.
The dark melodies of Monolith of Light, along with the deeply immersive synths give this album a cosmic feel. The deeply layered approach makes this album one that must be experienced multiple times to get the full scope of what is going on. Monolith of Light is a complex album, but in a way that increases, rather than distracts from, the overall atmosphere.
This is quite the debut from Inherits the Void. Emotional, dense, aggressive and above all, passionate, Monolith of Light will get under your skin. Released on November 26th, 2021, you can get your copy HERE.
