Chris Motionless discusses a decade of ‘Creatures’ on Mosh Talks

Frontman Chris Motionless details the nostalgic trip of revisiting the band’s polarizing debut and how the band’s evolution gives them a unique appreciation fo their enduring debut.

In a recent visit to the Mosh Talks interview series with Terry Bezer, Chris ‘Motionless’ Cerulli revealed that plans to celebrate the band’s 10th anniversary of their much beloved debut, Creatures, actually began last summer.

With the upcoming milestone on the horizon, the band knew they wanted to go big to celebrate the record and had some real aspirations of putting on quite the Halloween show to do it.

Enter the pandemic, the change of life as everyone has known it and the need to adapt more than ever in recent memory and what you have is the band’s DEADSTREAMing event that initially aired on October 28th and will rebroadcast on October 30th and 31st.

Chris discussed how preparing to play the album in full was a very nostalgic trip – one loaded with emotions. He confided that it was the first time in years that he had listened to some of those songs and understood then why it had become so polarizing. He shared that people loved the record so much that any departure from it was met with skepticism from fans. It was a timepiece and looking back, Chris gets why people hold it in such high regard.

Creatures was such an emphatic introduction that as the band continued to evolve as musicians and creatives, it seemed like such a directional shift for fans but in reality, it was the beginning of a new era for the band now being able to pursue their vision with their newly established platform.

When asked about what Chris Motionless of 2020 thinks of Chris Motionless of 2010, the frontman offered a quick smile and joked, “I wish I had gone to fucking therapy.” Revisiting the band’s debut naturally brought back a deluge of good and bad memories – great experiences and learning experiences but in terms of the music itself, Chris explains that he now hears the growing pains of an aspiring artist still learning his craft. Some of it caused him to tense up with how it stacks up against the kind of art he produces now, but he remains proud of the impact the record had and how it’s been able to endure.

The conversation would eventually steer toward the time off from touring and how Motionless In White has been able to remain productive both personally and professionally. While sharing that the band has been using the time to tend to things for themselves as individuals, Chris also discussed how the band’s creative itch has been soothed with projects like their cover of The Killers’ “Somebody Told Me,” their cinematic score-worthy renditions of “Another Life” and “Eternally Yours” for the ‘Motion Picture Collection’ EP, and most recently, their Creatures X anniversary track, ‘To The Grave.”

Chris also shared the the band continues to write new music and though the uncertain has sort of eliminated deadlines and expectations, he admitted that strategically the band really isn’t sure what the next steps are. Though they are actively tooling with new material, with so much up in the air, the timeline on when anyone will get to experience that is just as uncertain as everything else right now.
