A ‘Friday the 13th’ Series is In the Works from A24

The showrunner behind Hannibal is set to bring the dormant franchise back to life

Two years after John Carpenter’s original Halloween made an impact at the movies, Sean S. Cunningham would bring Friday the 13th to the big screen and solidify the slasher genre for good. Jason Voorhees is just as iconic of a horror figure as Michael Myers or Ghostface or Freddy Krueger (who he eventually fought in a crossover film!). The undead killer in the hockey mask has persevered through twelve total films along with countless novels and comic books and even video games.

That said, the last time the franchise was in action was back in 2009 with a reboot from Marcus Nispel, who also did the 2003 remake of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. You would think that with the current wave of the slasher revival, we would Jason see rise again to join in on the party. But rights issues coupled with jumbled ideas as to how to proceed with the franchise have kept things on hold – until now.

A prequel series titled Crystal Lake has been announced by Peacock, which will hold the exclusive streaming rights to the show. In a true surprise, it will be produced by A24, the studio behind a plethora of modern day horror game-changers. Bryan Fuller will serve as the head writer and showrunner. Fuller is certainly a major grab for the series, being known for shows like Pushing Daisies, Heroes, Hannibal, American Gods and Star Trek: Discovery.

As a streaming series, Fuller states that they have the rights to do absolutely anything under the Friday the 13th umbrella. Details about what exactly the story will be about are currently under wraps, but expect more info to steadily come out as we go into next year.

‘Crystal Lake’ will stream exclusively on Peacock.
