Posted by Nicolás Delgadillo in Culture on January 6, 2023

Kicking off this new year we have Christian Bale solving a murder with Edgar Allan Poe on Netflix, a banned horror classic comes to Shudder and much more

NOW STREAMING:

‘The Pale Blue Eye’ (Netflix)

Writer and director Scott Cooper teams up with Christian Bale once again in this historical fiction with a dash of mystery thriller thrown in. Bale plays Augustus Landor, a world-weary detective who teams up with a young Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Potter star Harry Melling) to solve a murder at the United States Military Academy in 1830. As chilling and intriguing as any good detective story is, The Pale Blue Eye is the kind of movie that basically demands a second viewing.

‘Star Wars: The Bad Batch (Season 2)’ (Disney+)

When the new season opens, months have passed since the events on Kamino, and the Bad Batch continue their journey navigating the Empire after the fall of the Republic. They will cross paths with friends and foes, both new and familiar, as they take on a variety of thrilling mercenary missions that will take them to unexpected and dangerous new places.

‘The Rig’ (Prime Video)

A group of workers on a remote Scottish oil rig are due to return to the mainland when a mysterious fog cloaks them and supernatural forces take hold.

‘Possession’ (Shudder)

Banned upon its original release in 1981, Andrzej Żuławski’s stunningly choreographed nightmare of a marriage unraveling is an experience unlike any other. Professional spy Mark (Sam Neill) returns to his West Berlin home to find his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) insistent on a divorce. As Anna’s frenzied behavior becomes ever more alarming, Mark discovers a truth far more sinister than his wildest suspicions. With its pulsating score, visceral imagery, and some of the most haunting performances ever captured on screen, Possession is cinematic delirium at its most intoxicating.

‘The Menu’ (HBO Max)

Margot and Tyler (Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult), a young couple, travel to an elite, remote, coastal island in order to dine at an exclusive restaurant where a mysterious chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish, expensive menu. But it soon becomes clear that the pretentious, pampered dinner guests are about to be served some shocking surprises. Consumerism takes on a hilariously scary meaning in this dark comedy that features Hong Chau, Janet McTeer, Judith Light and John Leguizamo in an all-star ensemble cast.

‘Copenhagen Cowboy’ (Netflix)

After a lifetime of slavery, Miu (Angela Budalovic) seeks justice and revenge. She meets her nemesis, Rakel (Lola Corfixen), and they embark on an odyssey through the natural and supernatural in the perilous landscape that is Copenhagen’s criminal underworld.

‘Death in the Dorms’ (Hulu)

From ABC News Studios, the six-episode anthology docu-series, ‘Death in the Dorms,’ tells the unimaginable true stories of six college students whose lives tragically ended in murder: UCLA student Andrea DelVesco, University of Florida first-year student Christian Aguilar, University of Virginia lacrosse player Yeardley Love, Baruch College first-year student Michael Deng, University of South Carolina senior Samantha Josephson, and Western Kentucky University first-year student Katie Autry.

‘The Walking Dead (Season 11)’ (Netflix)

The final season of the landmark AMC series finally arrives on Netflix. One final round of taking out zombies and human foes alike with all of the surviving characters. At least until we get to all of the spin-offs that are in the works.

‘Jurassic World Dominion’ (Prime Video)

From Jurassic World architect and director Colin Trevorrow, Dominion takes place four years after Isla Nublar has been destroyed. Dinosaurs now live—and hunt—alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures. This movie’s not very good but does offer some fun dino action.

‘Bromates’ (Hulu)

When best friends – though polar opposites – Jonesie (Lil Rey Howery) and Sid (Josh Brener) both break up with their girlfriends at the same time they decide to move in together in a misguided attempt to help each other through their respective breakups. Alongside their friends Angry Mike (Asif Ali) and Runway Dave (Brendan Scannell), things move quickly from heartbreak to hilarity, to life, and potentially, death.
