Supernatural chills and fantasy action kick off a wintry December on streaming this weekend

NOW STREAMING:

‘Troll’ (Netflix)

When an explosion in the Norwegian mountains awakens an ancient troll, officials appoint a fearless palaeontologist (Marie Wilmann) to stop it from wreaking deadly havoc. This fantasy-action film is directed by Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthag, known for The Wave and the pretty underrated 2018 reboot of Tomb Raider.

‘Darby and the Dead’ (Hulu)

After suffering a near-death experience as a young girl, Darby Harper (Riele Downs) gains the ability to see dead people. As a result, she becomes introverted and shut off from her high school peers and prefers to spend time counseling lonely spirits who have unfinished business on earth. But all that changes when Capri (Auli’i Cravalho), the Queen Bee of the school’s most exclusive clique, unexpectedly dies in a freak hair straightening accident, resulting in the obvious cancellation of her upcoming “Sweet 17.” Capri, however, pleads with Darby from the other side to intervene and convince Capri’s friends to proceed with the party as planned. In order to appease the wrath of the undead diva, Darby must emerge from her self-imposed exile and reinvent herself — which along the way allows her to find new joy back in the land of the living.

‘A Wounded Fawn’ (Shudder)

A Wounded Fawn follows the story of Meredith Tanning (Sarah Lind), a local museum curator who is dipping her toe back into the dating pool, only to be targeted by a charming serial killer (Josh Ruben). When a fateful romantic getaway between the two becomes a tense game of cat and mouse, both must confront the madness within him.

‘Slow Horses (Season 2)’ (Apple TV+)

Slow Horses follows a team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 – Slough House. ‘Willow’ (Disney+)

20 years after vanquishing the wicked queen Bavmorda, the sorcerer Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis) leads a group of misfits on a dangerous rescue mission into the unknown. It is a sequel series to the 1988 film of the same name.

‘American Carnage’ (Hulu)

2022 has been a massive year for modern Scream Queen Jenna Ortega. She stars in this horror comedy from Diego Hallivis in a world where the governor issues an executive order to arrest the children of undocumented immigrants. The newly detained youth are offered an opportunity to have their charges dropped by volunteering to provide care to the elderly, but once inside the eldercare facility, the volunteers discover the governor and the facility’s supervisor have cooked up a horrifyingly depraved conspiracy that endangers the young and the old.

‘Gone in the Night’ (Hulu)’

When Kath (Winona Ryder) and her boyfriend arrive at a remote cabin in the redwoods, they find a mysterious young couple already there. But when her boyfriend disappears with the young woman, Kath becomes obsessed with finding an explanation.

‘A Banquet’ (Hulu)

Widowed mother Holly (Sienna Guillory) is radically tested when her teenage daughter Betsey (Jessica Alexander) experiences a profound enlightenment and insists that her body is no longer her own, but in service to a higher power. Bound to her newfound faith, Betsey refuses to eat but loses no weight. In an agonizing dilemma, torn between love and fear, Holly is forced to confront the boundaries of her own beliefs.
