Guillermo del Toro reimagines a classic children’s tale, a new holiday horror classic comes to Shudder and much more on streaming this week

NOW STREAMING:

‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ (Netflix)

Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and stop-motion legend Mark Gustafson reinvent the classic story of a wooden puppet brought to life in this stunning stop-motion musical tale. It’s a story you think you may know… but you don’t.

‘Emancipation’ (Apple TV+)

Emancipation tells the triumphant story of Peter (Will Smith), a man who escapes from slavery, relying on his wits, unwavering faith and deep love for his family to evade cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his quest for freedom. The film is inspired by the 1863 photos of “Whipped Peter,” taken during a Union Army medical examination, that first appeared in Harper’s Weekly. One image, known as “The Scourged Back,” which shows Peter’s bare back mutilated by a whipping delivered by his enslavers, ultimately contributed to growing public opposition to slavery. The film is directed by renowned filmmaker Antoine Fuqua, who is known for Training Day, Olympus Has Fallen, and both The Equalizer films as well as the upcoming third one.

‘Christmas Bloody Christmas’ (Shudder)

It’s Christmas Eve and fiery record store owner Tori Tooms just wants to get drunk and party until the robotic Santa Claus at a nearby toy store goes haywire and makes her night more than a little complicated. Santa Claus begins a rampant killing spree through the neon-drenched snowscape against a backdrop of drugs, sex, metal, and violence, ultimately forcing Tori into a blood-splattered battle for survival against the ruthless heavy metal Saint Nick himself.

‘His Dark Materials (Season 3)’ (HBO Max)

The rebellion against the Authority becomes open warfare, with Asriel working to build a new Republic of Heaven. But to achieve his ends he needs the Subtle Knife, which is currently in Will’s hands. Hope will spark in darkness.

‘Bullet Train’ (Netflix)

Brad Pitt stars as Ladybug, an unlucky assassin determined to do his job peacefully after one too many gigs gone off the rails. Fate, however, may have other plans, as Ladybug’s latest mission puts him on a collision course with lethal adversaries from around the globe—all with connected, yet conflicting, objectives—on the world’s fastest train. The end of the line is just the beginning in this non-stop thrill-ride through modern-day Japan from David Leitch, the director of Deadpool 2.

‘Doom Patrol (Season 4)’ (HBO Max)

The team unexpectedly travels to the future to find an unwelcome surprise. Faced with their imminent demise, the Doom Patrol must decide once and for all which is more important: their own happiness or the fate of the world.

Desperate for income, Emily (Aubrey Plaza) takes a shady gig buying goods with stolen credit cards supplied by a charismatic middleman named Youcef. Seduced by the quick cash and illicit thrills, they hatch a plan to take their business to the next level.

‘South Side (Season 3)’ (HBO Max)

Two friends and aspiring venture capitalists who just graduated from community college are ready to take over the world, but must work at a rent-to-own store in Chicago’s Englewood neighbourhood until then.

‘Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area (Part 2)’ (Netflix)
